Huawei to build new data centre for Dubai Airports

Dubai Airports has partnered with Huawei to design and build a Tier III certified modular data centre complex (MDCC) at Dubai International (DXB) that will serve the world’s busiest international airport.

The design and construction contract has been signed during GITEX Technology Week.

On average, almost 230,000 passengers pass through DXB per day, growing towards 325,000 per day by 2023, making zero downtime and high reliability a vital requirement for Dubai Airports.

Ensuring that mission-critical IT is constantly operational is key in the aviation sector – and even more so for the operator of the world’s busiest international airport.
Therefore, Huawei will plan, design, implement and build the data centre integrated with the rest of the systems at the airport.

Alaa ElShimy, managing director and vice president, Huawei Enterprise Middle East, says Dubai Airports is committed to increasing the efficiency of the airport, hence the decision to partner with Huawei to build the state-of-the-art data centre.

“We are the number one player worldwide in the container data centre, having implemented such solutions in Europe and the US, in Asia and the Middle East. We have a lot of experience and we are going to bring this experience into this project,” says ElShimy.

The DXB data centre will be the first of two planned modular facilities that Huawei will build for Dubai Airports. Together, they will operate as a pair of mirrored Tier III data centres interconnected through a dedicated fibre optic link that will provide high-level resilience and availability to support the critical operations of Dubai Airports.

The average delivery time with this kind of project is two years but Huawei will deliver the project within one year, asserts ElShimy. “This will mean a faster time to market for Dubai Airports so they can get the service delivery to their customers faster,” he adds.

The data centre will provide a stable and reliable environment for Dubai Airports to host its private cloud. The MDCC’s will be the world’s first modular data centres that will be certified by the Uptime Institute to Tier III for design and construction.
