Huawei urges operators to redefine video, cloud, IoT strategies around broadband

Operators need to “redefine the scope” of their business, Huawei has said, as it launched a video management service and two new deals with Telefónica.

The China-based vendor talked up a three-point action plan for operators at its annual Ultra-Broadband Forum in Frankfurt last week.

It said operators need to position video as “the core basic service” for consumers, while the cloud must be the focus to capitalise on the enterprise market.

They also need to use the IoT as “an entry point into the digital transformation of vertical markets”.

Core to all three strategies is a converged fixed and mobile network.

David Wang, President of Huawei Network Solutions, said: “Telecom operators should rethink their role and business model in the B2C, B2B and IoT markets.

“By building up a ubiquitous, experience-driven, agile and on-demand ultra-broadband network, telecom operators will be able to monetise the business opportunities created by vertical market digital transformation.”

The vendor used the event to unveil VideoSense, which it described as a user experience-centric network management platform.

The solution includes the real-time collection of network-wide user experience data and a promise to take proactive measures to improve services.

Huawei said it wanted to change the traditional KPI-centric approach to operations and maintenance.

“Managing and maintaining video experience for large-scale user deployment has become a common challenge for most operators," said He Yibo, Vice-President of Huawei Network Product Line.

"The network is the backbone of the experience, while Operation, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) provides guaranteed levels of experience.

“Huawei VideoSense will enable operators to shift their focus from pipelines to experience and from passive O&M to proactive management.

“This allows operators to build experience-centric differentiated competitive edges."

Operators including China Mobile are already using the service, Huawei said.

It follows the April launch of a video as-a-service solution.

The vendor also announced it is working with Telefónica on two separate projects.

In Peru, the two companies are building Latin America's first converged DOCSIS 3.1-FTTH broadband network.

The operator’s existing DOCSIS 3.0 network is getting an upgrade and will deliver 1GBps speeds alongside a new greenfield FTTH network.

In Chile, Brazil and Mexico, meanwhile, Telefonica and Huawei have launched a public cloud service for businesses and a cloud hosting service aimed at the SME market.

José Luis Gamo, B2B Products and Solutions Director at Telefónica Business Solutions, said: "The launch in record time of the Open Cloud and Cloud Server services in Chile, Mexico and Brazil is a huge joint milestone for Telefónica and Huawei.”

“With this release, which represents Telefónica's commitment to an open and secure cloud, we are moving towards our goal of providing the best products for cloud services, while driving our customers’ digital transformation."
