Vodafone teams up with Netflix in Turkey

Vodafone has signed a deal with Netflix to bring the TV and video streaming service to Turkey.

Netflix is rolling its service out to 130 countries this year and announced plans to launch in Poland with T-Mobile earlier this week.

As in Poland, Netflix is offering local language, currency and content to Turkish customers.

Along with Vodafone, the company said it was working with Turkish TV manufacturer Vestel.

Next month, it said it planned to start “ a broad partnership” with Vodafone in Turkey.

It did not provide any further details.

Reed Hastings, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Netflix, said: “Turkish people are great storytellers with their hugely popular and internationally recognised Turkish dramas and Netflix aims to become one of its most vocal ambassadors.”

Vodafone saw service revenues in Turkey rise 19.5 percent to €585 million in the three months to June.

The operator has 22.4 million mobile customers after it added over 200,000 subscribers between April and June.

The number of fixed line customers grew by 61,000 to reach 424,000 over the same period.

Earlier this month, Liberty Global unveiled plans to launch Netflix in over 30 countries in which it operates.

The first country to receive the service will be the Netherlands, where it is embarking on a joint venture with Vodafone.

Netflix’s VP of Business Development EMEA, Chris Whiteley, told this year’s IBC event that he wanted to work with more telcos.

He said working together served as a “mutual customer acquisition tool”.
