Zantel to invest $15 million in mobile voice and data services

Mobile operator Zanzibar Telecom (Zantel) plans to spend around USD15 million on improving its mobile voice and data services, reports the Daily News. Under the investment, the cellco’s entire network will be modernised, with 4G LTE services expected to be extended to Dar-es-Salaam and some other areas. The work is mooted to be complete by September 2016. Zantel’s CEO Mr Benoit Janin is cited as saying: ‘Zantel has experienced difficult times over the last two years. But we have doubled our network coverage countrywide in June to reach more than 80% of the population … we can move forward now thanks to our subscribers and shareholders’ support.’

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Zantel launched its 4G network in Zanzibar in April 2016, while it was acquired by Millicom International Cellular (MIC) in October 2015.
