Apple moves up to 3rd place in global set-top box market

Apple has moved to third place in the global set-top box market in terms of revenue, thanks to its popular Apple TV devices. Apple's rise is supported by the consolidation of the STB market, with Arris buying Pace and Technicolor acquiring Cisco's activities, as well as strong demand for OTT media boxes, IHS said. In 2014, Apple was only in ninth place. In 2015, it shipped more than 10 million Apple TVs, the fifth highest volume in the world after Arris, Technicolor, Skyworth and ZTE, according to the market researcher.

Global set-top box shipments grew 4.8 percent in 2015 to 353 million units, supported by expansion of IPTV services in China. Market revenue increased by 3.4 percent to USD 5.7 billion in the fourth quarter of 2015, compared to the previous quarter, partially driven by next-generation device launches by Apple, Amazon, and Roku. Revenue for all of 2015 fell 5.4 percent to USD 22.2 billion, due to reduced demand for high-value STBs in North America, primarily caused by poor pay-TV performance in the region.
