Amazon launches Video Direct platform for content creators

Amazon has launched Amazon Video Direct (AVD) a new self-service programme for creators and storytellers to make their video content available to Amazon customers in the markets where Amazon Video is available, namely the US, UK, Germany, Austria and Japan.

Videos can be made available to rent or own, to view free with ads, or packaged together and offered as an add-on subscription. Video providers are given performance metrics to help them optimise the way they offer and promote content to customers. AVD launch partners include Conde Nast Entertainment, Samuel Goldwyn Films, Journeyman Pictures, Kino Nation, Mashable, Mattel, The Guardian and Business Insider.

The AVD Stars programme will give video creators a share of USD 1 million a month based on customer engagement with their titles. The company will distribute to the top 100 AVD titles a monthly bonus from the USD 1 million monthly fund on top of any other revenue earned. The AVD Stars programme will make its first bonus distributions based on streaming activity in June.

Separately, the Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon will keep 45 percent of ad revenue on AVD, matching YouTube’s terms. It will also keep half of the revenue from channel subscriptions and video rentals or purchases. For ad-free Amazon Prime videos, Amazon will pay content owners USD 0.15 for each hour streamed in the US and USD 0.06 in other markets.
