46% of Germans ready to drop cable & satellite for OTT

Almost every second German (46%) could imagine replacing TV reception via cable, satellite or DTT by internet-delivered over-the-top television (OTT) – an increase by 60% compared with last year.

This is the result of a survey conducted by market research institute TNS Infratest on behalf of internet TV provider Zattoo among 1,014 participants over 15 years of age.

According to Jörg Meyer, chief officer content and consumer at Zattoo, there are good reasons why viewers increasingly consider OTT to be an alternative to conventional reception methods.

“Most households have high-speed internet. Large technology companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google or Samsung push into the market with powerful streaming boxes and TV sets,” said Meyer. “And the internet TV services continuously improve regarding streaming quality, content offering and ease of use.”

Almost one in three viewers (30%) currently uses TV and video streaming services on their smart TV sets. The leading streaming devices are laptops and PCs (76%). Tablets are used by 24%, followed by smartphones (20%), streaming boxes and games consoles with 9% each.

The most used streaming offers are YouTube (66%), the TV channels’ catch-up portals (63%), video-on-demand services (34%) and TV livestreams (28%).
