Kenya’s Jamii Telecoms launches OTT streaming device

Jamii Telecoms has introduced an Internet-streaming device to provide subscribers with access to over-the-top (OTT) video services including Netflix, Huluplus, Kodi and Cloud TV.

The Android-based device is priced at KES10,000 (US$98.3), and also delivers premium pay-TV content such as SuperSports channels 1 to 5, with English Premium League football for KES1,000 ($9.90), reports the Business Daily.

The service requires a minimum broadband speed of 5mbps to deliver high definition (HD) content, delivered by Jamii for KES5,000 ($49) per month. Subscriptions to OTT and video-on-demand (VOD) providers must be secured independently.

“We are not in the business of selling content, however with the Jamii Android boxes, we want to add value to our customers by availing a device that can make them utilise the bandwidth capacity they have in a better way,” Joshua Chepkwony, CEO, Jamii Telecoms told Business Standard.

The company’s fibre service has initially been rolled out in the affluent neighbourhoods of Karen, Lavington, Kileleshwa and Runda, as well as Nairobi’s Central Business District, Westlands and Industrial Area and in Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret and Kisumu.
