Mexicans spend more time watching Netflix than FTA

Streaming video is becoming a serious alternative to TV in Mexico, where consumers watch Netflix for almost double as many hours as they watch free-to-air (FTA) TV.

According to Business Bureau's Media Essential report, Mexico leads video-on-demand (VOD) and over-the-top (OTT) consumption habits in Latin America.

While FTA is watched on average 5.8 hours per week, and pay-TV 10.2 hours, Mexicans spend 9.8 hours viewing Netflix, five hours on Totalplay and 4.8 hours on Claro Video. Mexicans' average time spent (ATS) is 5% more than in October 2015, up by 12 minutes.

According to the report, every Mexican home with Internet connection has access to at least one subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service, including both stand-alone services like Netflix and platforms bundled to pay-TV. These figures include account sharing, as two in three VOD subscriptions are shared.

As expected, online video watching and streaming are more common among youngsters and millennials. Only 17% Mexicans under 24 don't watch online content. Similarly one in five under 34 don't consume video through the Internet.

SVOD services and pirate platforms are the most common ways to access content, both for youngsters and millennials. Live streaming used to watch sports half the time, but this is not yet a serious competitor to SVOD platforms or linear TV.
