Telefónica to begin content production drive

In order to fill the schedule of its pay-TV platform in Spain, Telefónica plans to produce between eight to ten new series per year.

There are already 20 projects under development for Movistar+, and one series, La Peste, has entered the production phase. The series is directed by Alberto Rodríguez, who won a Goya award for La Isla Mínima, and will be filmed during Q4 2016. It is scheduled to premiere in the autumn of 2017.

Telefónica intends to produce series aimed at different target audiences and ready for watching on-demand and on all devices.

In addition to Spanish-focused formats, the telco's content division is looking to increase its international co-productions, both in Spanish and English.

Most of the new content will be premiered on Movistar+ via its video-on-demand (VOD) channels and its ready-to-premiere in-house signal #0, for which the network has promised five hours of original production from the outset, complemented with new formats, series and sports programming.

However, the majority of new productions will arrive on Spanish screens between 2017 and 2018.
