Spanish pay-TV rockets on IPTV

The last 12 months have seen the Spanish pay-TV sector add 1.4 million subscribers, almost all of them from IPTV fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) convergent packages.

The country's Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) has just released figures from Q1 2015 confirming that pay-TV is booming at a never-before-seen pace.

Ending March 2014 with 3.96 million subscribers, pay-TV showed 5.4 million accesses a year later. Fibre-based TV had almost 948,000 subs by the end of Q1 2014, and latest published figures show 2.27 million accesses.

Indeed, IPTV has become the most extensive TV technology in the country, driven by convergent, triple-, quad- and quintuple-play packages. Satellite direct-to-home (DTH) TV with 1.55 million subs and cable (1.16 million) are the second and third most used technologies.

At the end of March 2015, there were 8.6 million convergent packages in Spain, 1.9 million more than a year prior. Quint-play, including mobile and fixed phone, mobile and fixed broadband, and pay-TV, was the second most subscribed package with 2.6 million subs.

In monetary terms, the audiovisual sector generated over €1 billion during the first quarter of the year, 16.3% more than 12 months before, confirming the sector's recovery.
