StarHub, Nokia demo TDD-FDD VoLTE handover

Singapore's StarHub has achieved what it says is the first TDD-FDD VoLTE handover using its 4G HetNet in the bustling Marina Bay.

The company has deployed TD-LTE, FDD LTE and outdoor small cells from Nokia Networks as part of its HetNet in the region, with the goal of providing 100% service availability even under heavy load.

Nokia said the deployment uses LTE-Advanced carrier aggregation technology to improve data rates, and small cells at strategic locations to handle peak-hour data demand.

The network is capable of TDD-FDD VoLTE handover without call drops and with HD voice continuity.

Besides base stations, small cells and carrier aggregation software, Nokia also provided load balancing and project management capabilities for the trial.

“With HetNet and through our close collaboration with Nokia Networks, we are proud to deliver the world’s fastest, future-ready 4G network that can address the ever-growing data traffic demands of our customers without compromising on the quality of service, paving the way for Singapore to build the world’s first Smart Nation,” StarHub CTO Mock Pak Lum commented.

StarHub and Nokia have previously collaborated on trials of advanced LTE technologies such as 4x4 MIMO LTE-A. This trial achieved peak data rates of 600Mbps.
