Call in Oman to issue new telecom licences

A number of suggestions, including issuing new licences to network providers in the Sultanate, lowering call charges for mobile phones and internet data usage, and strengthening 4G signals in all wilayats in the Governorate of Muscat to provide the best service for subscribers were discussed at Muscat Municipal Council meeting on Monday.

The Council also looked into complaints of Amerat residents about pollution being caused by construction activities, and the suggestions, which were directed to the Ministry of Housing.

The suggestions included changing industrially used land to land meant for commercial/residential use. Amerat Municipality’s representative also raised the importance of formulating regulations for issuing licences for light construction activities, which would prevent

further pollution.

Coordination important

The Council members said it is important for telecommunication companies to coordinate with the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) to find appropriate ways to speed up the issuance of licenses to establish communication stations.

Members of the Council also suggested and directed the TRA to issue new licences to network providers in the Sultanate, which would help boost the quality of services and increase the monitoring of fraudulent networks.

The Council concluded its eighth meeting on Monday, which was headed by Sheikh Ibrahim Al Rawahi, Deputy Head of the Council.

During the meeting, suggestions based on the seventh meeting topic regarding telecommunication companies was brought to light in which data from the Oman Telecommunications Company revealed the company’s successes and development.

The members of the council suggested that an office comprising of representatives from all concerned authorities should be established to issue licences, as well as ensure that fibre optic cable extensions from the company, are in sync with the sewage system in Al Khuwair and Muttrah.
