India government spectrum swap to free up 15MHz of 3G spectrum

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) expects to complete a spectrum swap with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) that will free up 15MHz of 2100MHz band frequencies for commercial use by end-December this year, the Economic Times writes. The two ministries agreed earlier this year to a spectrum swap, through which the MoD would return its 15MHz of frequencies in the 2100MHz band in exchange for the same amount of spectrum in a dedicated ‘Defence Band’ in the 1900MHz range. According to a senior DoT official, the ministry is in the final stages of harmonising the spectrum and expects to complete the process by December 2015, at which point the DoT ‘will be in a position to decide who will go where and what will be the time frame.’ The process will increase spectrum efficiency and free up additional frequencies for commercial use, the official added.
