The world's fastest 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network belongs to StarHub Singapore. This is based on collated survey results from LTE network users all over the world released last Wednesday by independent network coverage checker OpenSignal, better known for its smartphone app that boosts your cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.
The results are collected quarterly, with the latest findings showing StarHub in the top spot for having an LTE download speed of 38Mbps on average, the fastest LTE network offered by a telco globally.
Vodafone Romania is the second fastest with 36Mbps. In third spot is Denmark's TDC with 35Mbps, while No. 4 is South Korea's Olleh with 34Mbps. Local rivals Singtel and M1 are doing pretty well for themselves, clinching the fifth and sixth-fastest spots at 32Mbps and 30Mbps respectively.
While StarHub's speeds may be unbeatable, it is not quite as good as its rivals when it comes to LTE coverage. Singtel has 88 per cent LTE network coverage on our island, putting it ninth on the list of telcos around the world and M1 ranking 12th with 86 per cent coverage. StarHub trails behind at No. 35 with its 77 per cent coverage.
Singapore does very well for LTE speeds overall, ranking second in a list of about 70 countries and territories for having the best average speed - 33Mbps - surpassed only by New Zealand clinching the top spot with a country average of 36Mbps.Taking third spot is Romania with 30Mbps and South Korea is No. 4 with 29Mbps.
However, LTE coverage in Singapore is not as impressive, as the country holds fifth place at 84 per cent. Hong Kong and Kuwait are both ahead of Singapore with 86 per cent coverage each.First place went to South Korea, which boasts 97 per cent LTE coverage. Only Japan, with 90 per cent coverage, and South Korea have LTE coverage above the 90th percentile. The survey's data is collected using the OpenSignal app, and the information is anonymously collected via the app's data-collecting engine to produce its findings. Some 325,000 global OpenSignal LTE users were sampled for the survey from June to August. The data comes from users of OpenSignal's Android app and iOS data was not included.
