Vodafone adds more countries where UK customers can get 4G

Vodafone UK customers will now be able to use 4G in several new foreign destinations, the operator has announced.

Vodafone has added Albania, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Jordan and Mauritius to the list of countries in which its customers can use 4G.

The new additions mean the network’s customers can use 4G in a total of 63 destinations across the world, the company said.

Vodafone customers can also opt into Vodafone EuroTraveller or Vodafone WorldTraveller, whether on 4G or not, in more than 70 destinations across the world.

Vodafone EuroTraveller means a customer can take their UK minutes, texts and data with them from £3 extra a day.

Similarly, WorldTraveller allows the use of UK minutes, texts and data worldwide for £5 a day.

EuroTraveller and WorldTraveller are available on all pay monthly price plans and certain business price plans. To use them, customers need to op in.

For customers who do not opt in to either of the plans, there is a data spending cap of £36.40. Customers are sent free text alerts when they reach 80% of their monthly spending limit. Once the cap is reached, they will not be able to use the mobile internet overseas for the rest of the month unless they text UNCAP to 40209 or call customer services.

The European Commission has announced that mobile roaming charges in Europe will be scrappedby June 2017.

Lack of education

A deal between the commission, the European Council and the European Parliament will see roaming charges cease to exist in the EU as of 15 June 2017.

Before then, roaming charges will also become cheaper from April 2016, with operators restricted to surcharges up to €0.05 per minute for calls, €0.02 per text message, and €0.05 per MB of data.

The restrictions make roaming 75% cheaper than current roaming caps for calls and data, the commission said.

Earlier this year, a survey by Worldsim showed that more than half of Britons don’t use their phone or tablet outside the UK for fear of being hit with huge roaming charges.

The poll from the international network specialist revealed that 52% of Brits don’t use their mobile devices abroad, while 26% search for the nearest wi-fi hotspot to avoid incurring expensive data charges.

More than a third (34%) of the 1,000 people polled said they only use their phone to send text messages.

More than a quarter (26%) said they often ended up paying more than they need, because of a lack of education about how data plans work abroad, while 15% said they were often stung by extra charges because they do not understand jargon like ‘data roaming’.
