Vodafone Egypt partners with World Food Program

Vodafone Egypt’s Foundation has donated USD $1.2 million to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in an effort to boost their profile in Egypt and to “help thousands of children, their families and teachers who will benefit through the school feeding program – sponsored by the WFP in Upper Egypt.”

Vodafone, who has also been pushing for an increase in infrastructure development in rural areas of Egypt, believes this is a continuation of their push into communities that need assistance.

A joint statement from the company and the UN organisation said that “around 67,000 people living in the poorest areas of Assiut, Fayoum and Beni Suef will benefit from Vodafone’s contribution.”

WFP will use the funds to provide daily nutritious snacks and monthly food rations to students and their families, in addition to training 300 teachers for the food awareness program.

There has been a partnership between WFP and the Vodafone Egypt Foundation since 2011. In 2014, approximately 500,000 children and their families took advantage of the school-feeding program.

In Egypt, many of the top telecommunications companies battle for positive public opinion and one of the ways operators have seen as a way of boosting their profile is to enact on-the-ground efforts to assist those in need.
