Intouch Media applies for IPTV licence; AIS currently using Thaicom IPTV concession

Intouch Media, a wholly owned subsidiary of Intouch Holdings (formerly Shin Corp) – the parent of Thailand’s mobile market leader Advanced Info Service (AIS) – has applied for an IPTV broadcasting licence, Thai newspaper The Nation reports. Earlier this month AIS launched fibre broadband and ‘Playbox’ IPTV services utilising (‘borrowing’) the IPTV licence of DTV Service Co, a subsidiary of Thaicom, another Intouch group company, and would reportedly switch to the IPTV licence of Intouch Media if the application is approved by the National Broadcasting & Telecommunications Commission (NBTC). The report adds, however, that the NBTC’s broadcasting committee is forwarding Intouch’s application to a new sub-panel established to screen operators of this type; the previous screening panel had already approved the company’s request, but the new subcommittee wants to take another look at the application.
