PLDT Group’s data centre arm Vitro inaugurated its 11th data centre – and the first to support AI and other hyperscale workloads – on Wednesday as it starts work on an even bigger hyperscale data centre with twice as much IT load capacity.
The Vitro Sta. Rosa facility in Laguna has an IT load capacity of 50MW, which PLDT said is double the combined capacity of Vitro’s other ten data centres. Vitro says it's the first AI-ready data centre in the Philippines.
Vitro Sta. Rosa has been activated in stages, with power from its 115kV Meralco switching station turned on in July 2024, while the data centre’s GPU servers were powered up two months ago.
At the launch ceremony, PLDT chairman, president and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan confirmed that the telco intends to build up to 500MW of data centre capacity to enable the Philippines be competitive with Malaysia as a regional data centre hub for Southeast Asia.
According to the Philippine Star, Pangilinan also said work is underway to design its planned 12th data centre in Cavite, in which PLDT will invest PHP40 billion (US$1 billion).
First announced in October 2023, the Cavite data centre will also be designed for hyperscale workloads, with twice the capacity of Vitro Sta. Rosa at 100MW. While the specifications are still being worked out, Vitro plans to deploy and activate the Cavite data centre in five phases of 20MW each, the report said.
Construction is expected to start next year, with the facility completed by 2028, the report added.
