Movistar Chile announced a new nationwide connectivity project, which consists of the renovation and modernization of its entire mobile network, which will lead to a new era for 5G.
With this plan, Movistar Chile – the leader in the fiber optic segment in the country – aims to have the best home connection and now also the best mobile network in the country, through an investment of US$140 million in this three-year project alone.
The plan was presented at the Germán Becker Stadium in Temuco by the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Claudio Araya; the Mayor of Temuco, Roberto Neira; and the Director of B2C Markets for Movistar Chile, Cristian Schalscha. The choice of this city symbolizing the positive impact that connectivity will have on the country’s regions.
Speeds at the soccer stadium have doubled thanks to this network transformation, while this transformation is already impacting towns in the region from Puerto Saavedra to Curarrehue.
The project results in multiple improvements:
• Renewal of more than 5,300 mobile sites (antennas).
• 80% coverage of urban and semi-rural areas with 5G.
• Improved internet speeds by an average of 40%.
• Positive impact in 170 rural communities.
• Reduction of environmental impact by 15% (measured in energy efficiency).
Movistar Chile’s B2C Market Director, Cristian Schalscha, said: “We are excited to announce our mobile network renewal and modernization project, which will undoubtedly usher in a new era for 5G. Within the framework of this announcement, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Claudio Araya, said: “Companies like Movistar are investing in the region today and this is key to advancing and improving people’s quality of life through all the tools that digital connectivity offers, in areas such as health, education, employment and security. This project will result in significant improvements to the 5G network, expanding coverage in urban and rural areas, such as Curarrehue. It is essential that we continue fostering public-private partnerships committed to the development and well-being of this and all regions of the country. Chile has all the conditions to continue growing and leading the telecommunications market in the region.”
