Across NZ in February, One NZ has upgraded or built a total of 16 sites throughout the motu, with 12 of those providing new 5G coverage to areas and a further 4 providing capacity improvement. The Waikato has 4 new sites, with 5G coverage now provided in Gordonton, Taupiri, Ngaruawahia, and Chartwell Square. In Otago, they worked with the Rural Connectivity Group to provide cell coverage to Mt Aspiring Road and the Matutituki Suspension Bridge, and installed another 5G tower in Mosgiel.
In Canterbury, One NZ introduced 5G to Lake Hood, and the Christchurch suburbs of Casebrook West and Northwood. Other upgrades extend cell reception and 5G, with work in Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki and Wellington completed over February. One NZ recently acquired Dense Air and its radio spectrum holdings to help ‘add an extra lane to the motorway’ and it’s going to make a massive difference for New Zealanders on their network.
One NZ has now launched options for even better coverage with One NZ Satellite TXT. Currently around 40% of New Zealand’s land area has no traditional mobile coverage due to being isolated and hard to reach. One NZ customers with an eligible mobile plan and phone can TXT from anywhere in NZ with a line of sight to the sky - whether that’s on the farm, on the road, on the water, or in the mountains.

We understand the importance of connectivity for those living in Otago, and we have a team of engineers working out the best locations to provide coverage to the region. We spend over $100 million upgrading more than 300 sites across NZ each year to ensure our customers are better connected. With geography as rugged as New Zealand, we always have work to do. If you’re out and about in the Waikato and lose coverage, make sure you report it using our One Pin tool, so we can factor it into our network planning
