Telia, Telenor embark on 2G shutdown campaign in Norway

This autumn, the shutdown of the 2G network in Norway will begin. As part of this, Telia and Telenor have entered into a campaign collaboration to make the transition to newer technology as easy as possible. Together, they are launching the website www.byttnettnå.no, where individuals and businesses can find answers to any questions they may have about the technology switch.

After serving Norway well for more than 30 years, 2G is soon to have played out its role. For more than a decade, mobile operators have communicated that they will shut down 2G networks sequentially from 2025. Electronics connected to this technology will stop working. This will affect many individuals, businesses, municipalities, organizations, and suppliers who currently use devices connected to 2G.

To increase awareness, the country's two largest mobile operators have joined forces on a joint initiative. The goal is to raise awareness and spread information about the upcoming transition from the old 2G network to modern and more robust technologies such as 4G, 5G, and fiber. By getting as many people as possible to switch to newer and more modern technology, Telia and Telenor hope to avoid situations where important connected functions in society do not work or people cannot make calls.

Telia will begin the shutdown of its 2G network in August 2025. Telenor has decided to start its shutdown from December 31, 2027, to ensure the best possible transition to newer technology, especially for health and care services such as security alarms. Both Telia and Telenor are following developments elsewhere in Europe.

Birgitte Engebretsen, CEO, Telenor Norway

Both Telia and we already have good and ongoing dialogue with our customers about the closure of the 2G network. Part of the reason why we are now joining forces is not least because we want to reach customer groups that we do not necessarily have an overview of or are in direct contact with.

Morten Karlsen Sørby, Acting CEO, Telia Norway

When both Telia and Telenor close the 2G network, these and other 2G services will stop working. Through the joint website, we want to ensure that affected customer groups receive the best possible information about the 2G closure and the importance of checking their equipment.
