During a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, the Iraqi cabinet on Tuesday approved the creation of a national mobile company to operate a 5G network in collaboration with Vodafone.
The new company will be formed with contributions from the Trade Bank of Iraq (TBI), Iraq’s National Board of Pensions, and the Ministry of Communications, as stated in an announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
This move is part of a broader initiative aimed at improving the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, allowing for local investments in the venture.
The establishment of a 5G network marks a major milestone in Iraq’s telecom sector. The government is committed to enhancing the nation’s digital infrastructure with local financial support.
According to Hiyam Al-Yasiri, Iraq’s Minister of Communications, this initiative will bring modern technology to the country, reduce costs, increase national revenue, and improve the quality of services for residents.
Following a decision by the Iraqi cabinet in late November, Vodafone was selected to manage the operation of the new 5G network.
The new 5G network, offering a peak speed of 10 gigabits per second, will provide significantly faster download speeds and much lower latency, ensuring seamless communication.
Iraq’s push to roll out 5G technology positions the country to join 54 others already utilizing this advanced network, marking a key step forward in its telecom evolution.
