SKT joins forces with IonQ to advance quantum technology

SK Telecom says that it has formed a strategic partnership with IonQ, a leading US-based quantum computing company, to advance artificial intelligence and quantum technology.

IonQ is a frontrunner in quantum computing, particularly for its on-trap technology, which offers high stability and precision. By signing a memorandum of understanding, the Korean telecom carrier and IonQ aim to lay the groundwork for the era of quantum computing-driven AI.

Under the agreement, SK Telecom plans to integrate IonQ’s quantum computing technology with its existing AI capabilities, including its personal AI agents, such as A. and Aster, AI data centers, GPU-as-a-service and Edge AI solutions.

Additionally, the partnership will combine IonQ’s quantum expertise with SK Telecom’s quantum cryptography technologies, including quantum key distribution and post-quantum cryptography, further strengthening the telecom carrier’s AI business competitiveness.

As part of the agreement, SK Telecom and SK Square, the investment arm of SK Group, will exchange their stakes in Geneva-based quantum-safe crypto solution provider ID Quantique for IonQ shares, reinforcing their cooperation with IonQ.

Despite the share exchange, SK Telecom remains committed to its partnership with ID Quantique in quantum cryptography. The company intends to leverage continuous collaboration to further develop technologies and solutions that solidify its leadership in Korea’s quantum security market.

“Quantum technology is not an option but a necessity for the advancement of AI,” said SK Telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang. “We’ll continue to make proactive investments and partnerships to solidify our position as a leading AI company.”
