Ciena announced that digital infrastructure and technology provider Cirion Technologies will deploy its solutions on subsea and terrestrial cable routes to enable its Latin American data centres to support growing demand for cloud and AI.
As part of the deal, Cirion will upgrade the eastern leg of its South America Crossing (SAC) fibre system linking the US Virgin Islands to Brazil with Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent optical technology. The new equipment will boost channel speeds in the SAC East route to 1.2 Tbps.
Meanwhile, Cirion will also deploy Ciena gear for its recently announced SAC-2 subsea route, which uses capacity on Google’s Firmina subsea system connecting Brazil and Argentina to the US east coast.
That deployment will utilise Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme submarine network solution with the 6500 optical platform (which will also use WL6e) and RLS submarine line terminating equipment (SLTE). Ciena said the solution will enable optical connectivity speeds of 800 Gbps along the 10,975-km segments of SAC-2 and 1.2 Tbps along the 2,500-km segments.
Cirion will also use WL6e to deploy 1.6-Tbps wavelengths across its metro DCI and backhaul networks. Ciena claims this will mark the first 1.6 Tbps single carrier wavelength deployments in Latin America.
The deal also includes Ciena’s 8110, 8112, and 8114 coherent aggregation routers and its Navigator Network Control Suite.
