Kontron and Telekom Slovenije partner for private 5G in Slovenia

5G private networks continue to make waves in a number of markets, this time in Slovenia, with the news that Kontron, a provider of mission-critical communication solutions, and operator Telekom Slovenije have launched the first commercial standalone (SA) 5G private network in the country.

Kontron has, in cooperation with Telekom Slovenije, provided chemical processing company Cinkarna Celje with a private 5G mobile network solution, ensuring advanced wireless connectivity at its manufacturing location, including seven warehouses, in Celje, the fourth-largest city in Slovenia.

This, says Kontron, paves the way for the digitalisation of warehouse operations with portable mobile terminals.

Kontron says its comprehensive solution provides the software and hardware for implementing the 5G SA core network, while Telekom Slovenije says it provides powerful, reliable and secure connectivity via its 5G radio access network (RAN).

Cinkarna Celje, which employs approximately 720 people, will utilise the private 5G mobile network in phase one to organise and digitalise warehouse operations and operations in general. Kontron's solution makes it possible to track materials in warehouses with barcode readers and sensor integration with direct connectivity to the 5G network. In the future the private mobile network will be used as a platform for digitalising other segments of operations.

In addition, reliable and secure device connectivity will be leveraged for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions, such as autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) and sensors designed to carry out monitoring and control processes.

Janez Öri, Executive Director of Communication Solutions at Kontron, explains that the 5G private mobile network solution provides robust and secure coverage across factory premises and warehouses, and is designed for industrial use, providing features for easy network and device management. He continues: “It enables seamless mobility for people, assets and goods and increases productivity and efficiency, while prioritising security, reliability and cost optimisation, with support for various applications.”

Aleš Skok, President of the Management Board of Cinkarna Celje, adds: “The network allows us to transfer data faster and more reliably, which is key for improving efficiency and productivity. Low latency will enable the use of advanced technologies such as automation and remote operations, which will contribute towards improved safety and reliability of our services. We see a wide use of the 5G network in various industrial scenarios, including warehouse automation, and improving the mobility and connectivity of our employees.”
