Telefonica to invest US$500 million in 4G and 5G in Venezuela

Telefónica will invest 500 million dollars (almost 490 million euros) in the deployment of 5G technologies and in strengthening its 4G network after obtaining a new block of radio spectrum in the 2,600 megahertz (MHz) band in an auction process undertaken in the country.

The development of Movistar's 5G network will be under the Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) scheme in the 2,600 MHz band, where the company already had spectrum. The president of Movistar in Venezuela, José Luis Rodríguez Zarco, has pointed out that both 4G and 5G represent very important investments that translate into more connected people.

"This technology is innovative and will allow for a progressive, fluid and efficient coexistence between 4G and 5G networks, optimising the use of the available spectrum and offering a user experience with high quality standards," said Movistar's Director of Wholesale Business and Public Affairs, Rowil Contreras.

As part of the 5G development project, 805 nodes will be installed throughout the country in the coming years. "This will allow us to carry out a rapid and efficient deployment, to provide a 5G service with practically national coverage and an increasingly robust 4G network," explained Movistar's Technology Director, Esther Borges.

This technological solution provides a better user experience with greater speed, offers a balance between coverage and capacity, enhances propagation inside buildings, making it ideal for urban and densely populated environments; it also offers greater stability and consistency in the connection.

Movistar's investment plan will significantly strengthen the country's telecommunications infrastructure and platforms, with cutting-edge technology and significantly improving connectivity. More than 6,000 network actions will be implemented this year alone.
