A new data centre campus is being developed in Leopoldina in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, a large inland state in southeastern Brazil, by two major names in their respective fields.
The development partners are venture capital and private equity firm Supernova Participações and real estate development firm Mapa Investimentos.
The companies partnered last year to target hyperscale data centre development with plans to invest an initial BRL300 million (about US$49.3 million) into the project. According to the website Data Centre Dynamics, Wagner Avelar, president of Supernova, has explained that the park will host up to three data centres from major players in the hyperscale market.
Work on the first 60MW, 30,000 square metre building is due to start this year. Operations are expected to commence in 2026. The other facilities are expected to have similar capacity, totalling approximately 200MW.
An end customer has not been named – nor is it clear which hyperscalers are being targeted. However, the companies are reportedly in discussions to secure an anchor tenant.
Data Centre Dynamics says that, according to Secretary of State for Economic Development Fernando Passalio, Minas Gerais has stood out in terms of investments in the sector, with a record budget execution of BRL472.2 million (about US$77.5 million) this year in innovation.
João Paulo Braga, CEO of Invest Minas, the State Government's Investment Promotion Agency founded in 1968, suggests that this project will boost the local economy by generating jobs and will attract companies seeking efficiency and security in data processing.
