Kyivstar to phase out 3G in select cities after 4G RF testing

Kyivstar has announced that it has succesfully tested radio frequencies in the 2100 MHz spectrum in 29 cities over the last two years. According to the results of testing, the speed and quality of 4G mobile Internet has increased significantly, by an average of 40%.

Based on these results, the operator has reported that it will be turning off its 3G networks in the regions of Lviv, Zhovkva, Vinniki, and Bold, in order to improve the 4G network in certain regions.

3G sunsetting in Lviv, Lviv region, Zhovkva, and Vynnyky is scheduled for February 25, 2025. In Smila, it is scheduled for January 28, 2025. The gradual phase-out of 3G technology is a multi-year project that is of great importance for the entire electronic communications industry, as it not only improves the customer experience and increases the speed of 4G, but also prepares the network for the launch of 5G technology in Ukraine. And this can be implemented, including by freeing up frequencies from outdated technologies, such as 3G.

If Kyivstar subscribers have not yet switched to 4G, they will still be able make calls, send SMS, and use other mobile services, except 3G, without changes. If their SIM card does not support 4G, they can replace it with a USIM without additional fees, while keeping their number.
