The telecommunications sector in Congo is reaching a crucial milestone with the expansion of services available to consumers. This new dynamic reflects the national ambitions for modernization and digital inclusion.
Congolese Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Digital Economy Léon Juste Ibombo (pictured, left) announced the official launch of Congo Telecom’s mobile phone network on Monday, December 23. Test calls with MTN Congo and Airtel Congo have proven successful, marking the beginning of a new era for connectivity in the country.
This initiative should enable Congo Telecom to diversify its activities and sources of revenue. By adding mobile telephony to its portfolio, the operator is positioning itself as a player capable of meeting the growing needs for connectivity and digital innovation. Since its creation in 2003, the company has consolidated its presence in the fixed telephony and optical fiber sectors. This diversification is a strategic step to expand its footprint in the national market.
The initiative is part of Congo Telecom's ambition to become the leading digital operator in the Republic of Congo and a major player in Central Africa by 2030. To achieve this goal, the company has implemented a four-year strategic plan, "Transform", based on eight pillars: offers, customer experience, brand image, cost optimization, corporate culture, human capital, technologies and networks, as well as the ecosystem and partnerships.
Congo Telecom’s entry into the mobile telephony market could shake up the telecommunications landscape in Congo. Currently dominated by a duopoly formed by MTN and Airtel, this sector could benefit from increased competition, thus stimulating innovation and improved services for consumers. According to the Regulatory Agency for Posts and Electronic Communications (ARPCE), MTN controlled 60% of the market share in October 2023, compared to 40% for Airtel. Congo Telecom’s entry could reshuffle the cards and offer new opportunities for users and the Congolese digital economy.
