Virgin Media O2 has enhanced its mobile network across the UK by connecting 1,000 mobile sites to its proprietary 10Gbps fibre backhaul network. The upgraded sites now benefit from increased capacity and throughput, delivering faster response times and more reliable network performance for customers.
The upgrades are made possible by Virgin Media O2’s Converged Interconnect Network (CIN), a new infrastructure designed to carry both mobile and fixed traffic. This system enables traffic aggregation closer to customers, increasing efficiency and ensuring a more dependable experience. Previously, these mobile sites relied on third-party backhaul connections, which could become bottlenecks during peak usage. By integrating these sites into Virgin Media O2’s fibre network, customers can now enjoy a higher capacity network with improved throughput.
Leveraging a unified infrastructure for mobile and fixed traffic, Virgin Media O2 aims to enhance customer experience and reliability. The new network architecture is more resilient and scalable to meet growing capacity demands, particularly as mobile traffic on the network has significantly increased over the past year. This innovative approach to backhaul connections not only improves current services but also accelerates the rollout of Virgin Media O2’s mobile network. By utilizing its own fibre network, the company eliminates reliance on third-party backhaul providers, reducing costs and streamlining operations.
