Telecom operators Vodacom and du are demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability through new initiatives focused on e-waste recycling. These efforts highlight the growing role of telecom operators in promoting responsible waste management and contributing to a circular economy.
In South Africa, Vodacom has partnered with Circular Energy, a not-for-profit producer responsibility organization (PRO), to address the growing challenge of e-waste. This partnership will facilitate the responsible collection, recycling, and environmentally sound management of Vodacom’s e-waste, including batteries, lighting equipment, and packaging.
“South Africa is one of the highest generators of e-waste on the African continent,” stated a Vodacom representative, emphasizing the importance of responsible e-waste management.
This initiative aligns with South Africa’s extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulations, which encourage producers to take greater responsibility for the end-of-life impact of their products. Vodacom has also implemented various e-waste circularity initiatives, including recycling over 1,273 tonnes of network equipment in the last financial year.
Meanwhile, in the UAE, du has partnered with Dubatt Battery Recycling to recycle all spent lead acid batteries from its operations. This initiative reflects du’s commitment to ecological sustainability and resource efficiency.
“This proactive engagement in battery recycling aligns with its commitment to ecological sustainability and resource efficiency,” stated a du representative.
du’s sustainability strategy encompasses various initiatives, including energy efficiency measures, sustainable procurement practices, and waste management programs. The company actively promotes responsible environmental practices throughout its operations.
These initiatives by Vodacom and du demonstrate the proactive role telecom operators can play in addressing environmental challenges. By implementing responsible e-waste management practices and promoting a circular economy, these operators are contributing to a more sustainable future.
