Virgin Media O2’s Net-Zero HQ Investment in Manchester

Virgin Media O2 has announced a substantial investment in a new net-zero carbon office space in Manchester, further showcasing its commitment to sustainable business practices. By securing a contract with Island, a state-of-the-art workspace, the company is ensuring a future-proof environment for its employees. This move aligns with Virgin Media O2’s sustainability goals and aims to promote a modern, flexible working atmosphere.

The newly signed agreement with Island positions it as Virgin Media O2’s central Manchester office from late next year, coinciding with the expiration of its lease at the Wythenshawe office. The office planning included a comprehensive property review and a shortlist of options that support the company’s flexible working policies.

Island, developed by HBD and Greater Manchester Pensions Fund, offers employees numerous local amenities and high-quality facilities. Strategically chosen for its transport links and eco-friendly features, the site includes 12,500 sq ft of communal spaces and a rooftop terrace. The workspace is designed to achieve an Excellent BREEAM Sustainable Building Certification, indicating innovative and environmentally conscious design strategies.

The agreement offers a modern workspace for multi-skilled customer service teams, handling various client interactions. Having been based in Wythenshawe since 1991, Virgin Media O2 extends its long-standing investment in Manchester through this relocation.

Patricia Cobian, Chief Financial Officer, emphasised Virgin Media O2’s strategic focus on Manchester’s thriving technology hub. She noted the importance of improving employee experience and reducing carbon emissions through the new office’s advanced environmental credentials and transport facilities. The relocation to Island further solidifies Virgin Media O2’s presence in the region.
