Oman has announced the launch of an ambitious Artificial Intelligence (AI) programme aimed at transforming its digital economy and supporting the nation’s Vision 2040 strategy. The initiative, unveiled by the Omani government, seeks to harness the power of AI and emerging technologies to foster economic diversification, enhance public services and elevate the nation’s competitiveness on the global stage.
Central to the AI programme is its focus on integrating AI across key sectors, including healthcare, energy, finance and logistics, with the goal of improving efficiency, driving innovation and creating a sustainable knowledge-based economy. The programme is aligned with Oman’s Vision 2040 roadmap, which emphasizes economic diversification away from oil dependency and the promotion of innovation and technology as pillars for future growth.
During the announcement, Oman’s Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, Saeed Bin Hamoud Al Maawali, emphasized the critical role of AI in shaping the future of Oman’s economy. “This AI initiative represents a transformative step towards realising the goals of Vision 2040. It will empower our industries, modernise infrastructure, and equip our citizens with the skills needed for the digital age,” Al Maawali said.
Oman plans to establish specialised AI research centres, forge partnerships with global technology leaders and invest in the education and upskilling of its workforce to meet the demands of a digitally-driven economy. The programme also includes regulatory frameworks to ensure the ethical use of AI and safeguard data privacy.
Experts predict the AI sector will contribute significantly to Oman’s GDP over the coming years, creating high-value jobs and fostering entrepreneurship. Additionally, the government aims to attract foreign investment by positioning Oman as a regional hub for AI development and innovation.
As part of its broader digital transformation efforts, Oman has already invested in cloud computing, 5G technology and smart city infrastructure. The new AI programme is expected to further accelerate these initiatives, enhancing Oman’s regional and global economic standing.
Oman’s Vision 2040 is a long-term development plan that envisions a diversified, sustainable and technology-driven economy by 2040, with AI playing a central role in the country’s modernisation efforts.
