Italian telecom operator WindTre has further expanded its 5G TDD (Time Division Duplex) network, now covering 75 percent of the population. According to the operator's website, the latest update confirms that the network reaches all major regions in Italy, including Tuscany, Marche, Lazio, Lombardy, Sicily, Piedmont, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Puglia, Veneto, and more.
Additionally, WindTre's 5G FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) DSS (Dynamic Spectrum Sharing) network now covers 97 percent of the population, further strengthening its 5G network presence across Italy. In total, WindTre provides 97 percent coverage in 5G FDD DSS mode and 75 percent in 5G TDD mode, with coverages overlapping.
WindTre has deployed 5G NSA technology, and its 5G network utilises technologies, including 5G NR in DSS mode on the FDD frequencies at 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz (5G FDD DSS), as well as 5G NR on the 3600 MHz TDD band.
The operator explained that 5G FDD DSS technology allows dynamic use of the same FDD spectrum for both 4G and 5G connections. The network intelligently and swiftly switches between 4G and 5G based on the type of device and the customer's subscription plan, WindTre explained.
Furthermore, the company stated that the roll-out of 5G TDD technology is ongoing, with priority given to high-traffic areas. WindTre's network already covers 99.7 percent of the population with its 4G network.
