Telin partners with Indosat to develop ICE System 2 subsea cable

Telkom Indonesia’s international arm Telin said that it has signed a strategic partnership with Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison to develop ICE System 2, the latest announced leg of Telin’s Indonesia Cable Express subsea cable project.

According to Telin, ICE System 2 will connect Singapore to various landing points around Indonesia, including Jakarta, Surabaya, Balikpapan, Makassar, and Manado. Under an MoU signed on Wednesday at Telin’s BATIC 2024 conference in Bali, Telin and Indosat will collaborate on a network extension that will connect the points of presence (PoPs) of both operators with ICE System 2.

This will enhance connectivity quality, efficiency and robustness at the targeted landing points, as well as add cost efficiencies to the project, said Telin CEO Budi Satria D. Purba.

"Our collaboration with IOH on the ICE System 2 is set to create a robust telecommunications network that will support Indonesia's digital economy,” he said in a statement. No financial details were disclosed.

Telin’s ICE programme, revealed in September 2023, aims to build seven separate cable systems connecting Indonesia to all potential markets over the next five years.

The first announced ICE project aims to connect Malaysia, Singapore and Batam. Last month, Telin revealed it is partnering with BW Digital to develop and construct the Nongsa-Changi subsea cable system across the Singapore Strait, linking data centres in Batam and Changi, as part of the ICE system.

In February, Telin formed a consortium with Telecom Egypt and UAE-based e& Carrier & Wholesale Services to develop the ICE IV Project that aims to interconnect Indonesia and Singapore to India, Oman, Egypt, and the UAE.
