Comcast’s streaming service Peacock just concluded its second Summer Olympic Games coverage since launching in 2020, and it is already setting records that it will look to smash in the future.
On Monday, Comcast’s NBC Universal said Peacock subscribers streamed more than 23.5 billion minutes of 2024 Summer Olympic Games coverage between late July and early August. The amount of total minutes streamed was 40 percent higher than the 2020 Summer Olympic Games and the 2022 Winter Olympic Games combined. The 2020 Summer Games, held in Tokyo, were delayed to 2021 because of the coronavirus health pandemic.
“The Games marked a groundbreaking moment for Peacock, which delivered a flawless user experience and cutting-edge innovation while shattering all-time Olympics streaming records,” Mark Lazarus, the Chairman of NBC Universal Media Group, said in a statement.
On a daily basis, Peacock and other NBC digital TV services have generated an average of 4 million to 6 million viewers, according to The Desk‘s review of Adobe Analytics data supplied by NBC.
Peacock offered live coverage of every Olympic competition — more than three dozen in total — along with simulcasts of NBC, CNBC, E!, Golf Channel and USA Network when those channels were airing Olympic events. Peacock also streamed the Opening Ceremony in July and the Closing Ceremony last Sunday.
Peacock was the exclusive destination for special ancillary programming related to the 2024 Summer Games, including the recap show “Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart & Kenan Thompson,” a personalized daily recap of the games featuring AI-generated narration featuring sportscaster Al Michael’s voice, and a whip-around program called “Gold Zone” hosted by Scott Hanson (of NFL RedZone fame) that offered live look-ins during critical moments of Olympic competitions.
The streaming service will offer similar coverage of the 2024 Paralympic Games from Paris later this month.
