The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed telecom operators to simplify their tariff plans, bundles and promotional activities. It aims to provide clear, easy to understand and accurate information to subscribers to facilitate their decision-making.
The directive requires mobile network operators to publish a comprehensive table showing the characteristics of their different offers. This includes details on additional options, prices, how subscribers can sign up or unsubscribe, renewal conditions, validity period, price per second for on-network or off-network and international calls, expected data speeds, rollover policies…
According to the NCC, the directive is the result of consultations with industry stakeholders. The regulator recently asked telecom companies to conduct a comprehensive audit of their billing systems. It also held a series of focus group discussions with consumers to check their awareness of tariffs and gather recommendations for a better tariff system.
The measure comes amid discontent among telecom subscribers. They accuse, among other things, the operators of " stealing " their browsing data, which is quickly running out. Although it finds the telecom companies not guilty, the NCC is convinced that transparency should help solve the problem and protect subscribers.
