Indonesian telco Telkomsel has deployed 49 base stations to support 4G and 5G mobile services in the country's new capital city, Nusantara (IKN).
Nusantara is set to open on August 17, located on the island of Borneo, 800 miles away from the current capital Jakarta on the island of Java.
It's part of Indonesian President Joko Widodo's plans to build an entirely new "green" capital by clearing virgin rainforest on Borneo.
Telkomsel will become the first Indonesian telco to provide 5G services from the opening of the new capital.
The carrier said this week that it has optimized its network in two IKN buffer cities, Balikpapan and Samarinda.
According to the telco, this includes bolstering its network in airports, shopping centers, lodging, and main roads connecting the two cities with IKN.
"By ensuring the optimization of the leading broadband network, we are committed to providing convenient communication access in the Capital City of the Archipelago and supporting digital transformation in various sectors in order to realize the vision of IKN to become a sustainable city in the world that has smart city capabilities based on future technology," said Telkomsel network director, Indra Mardiatna.
"This step is in line with Telkomsel's vision and mission to provide leading services that empower the community, and support the government in efforts to equalize development and provide infrastructure that can become a sustainable driver of the Indonesian economy."
Rival telco Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) is also developing a 4G LTE network for the city.
The company's CEO Vikram Sinha told DCD earlier this year, that Indosat has so far invested $10 million to roll out 4G infrastructure in Nusantara to deploy between 30 to 40 base transceiver stations in Nusantara, on top of the 30 4G sites it already operates in the area.
The move to switch capitals is estimated to cost $30 billion. Indonesia's government has opted to move out of Jakarta, which has a population of 34 million, due to overcrowding, and the threat of severe rainfall that could leave it underwater by 2050.
