Converge ICT taps Ribbon to boost fibre backbone to terabit speeds

Philippine fiber broadband provider Converge ICT Solutions says it is collaborating with Ribbon Communications to boost the capacity of its fibre backbone to terabit levels using Ribbon’s Apollo optical networking system.

According to Ribbon, Converge ICT is leveraging its 5-nm 140G baud transmission chipset, which it says will expand fibre network capacity from the current 800 Gbps to 1.2 Tbps per channel within the network. That will enable the network to provide more than enough capacity to support hyperscale applications that need at least 400 Gbps, the vendor said.

Ribbon also claims its 5-nm chipset is more energy efficient and has better heat management capabilities than other solutions on the market.

Converge is also leveraging Ribbon’s Muse SDN Domain Orchestration, which provides toolsets to maximize network capabilities and ensure peak efficiency with automation, planning, node design, and real-time control, Ribbon added.

Converge CEO and Co-Founder Dennis Anthony Uy said in a statement that Ribbon’s technology will equip its network to meet increasing demand for large-scale capacity amid the rapid surge in data consumption and growing adoption of cloud-native applications and services.

“Ribbon’s solution surpasses our stringent requirements for this overlay on our existing backbone,” he said. “This new technology will bring our customers unprecedented speed and high bandwidth availability amid the growing demand for data-intensive applications.”

Earlier this month, Converge ICT signed an MOU with US-based IT solutions provider Supermicro to help it build three 'green' AI data centres in the Philippines. The data centres will host Nvidia GPUs capable of supporting generative AI applications such as a national large language model (LLM), smart manufacturing and video generators.
