Nigcomsat and Hotspot to provide internet connectivity in rural Nigeria

Nigcomsat Limited has announced a strategic partnership with Hotspot, a specialist in rural connectivity solutions, to enhance internet access in underserved communities across Nigeria.

According to a statement by Aisha Bantam, Assistant General Manager of Corporate Affairs at Nigcomsat, this collaboration aims to transform the availability of reliable and affordable internet services in remote and rural areas that have traditionally lacked connectivity.

Under the terms of the agreement, Nigcomsat and Hotspot will leverage their respective strengths to deploy advanced satellite technology and innovative connectivity solutions to connect remote and rural areas that have traditionally lacked access to internet connectivity.

Bantam said: “By combining Nigcomsat’s extensive satellite infrastructure and Hotspot’s expertise in rural connectivity, this partnership will empower communities to bridge the digital divide and unlock new opportunities for socioeconomic development.

“At Nigcomsat, we are committed to leveraging our technological capabilities to drive digital transformation and improve the lives of Nigerians, especially those in underserved regions.”

Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigcomsat Limited, added: “This collaboration with Hotspot highlights our unwavering dedication to connect the unconnected and ensure that no community is left behind in the digital age.”

Engineer Morenikeji Aniye, CEO of Hotspot, stated: “We are excited to join forces with Nigcomsat. Our mission to connect the millions of unconnected individuals aligns perfectly with this initiative. Together, we will deploy innovative solutions to provide reliable and affordable internet access, empowering rural communities to fully participate in the digital economy and access essential services.”

The agreement highlights Nigcomsat’s ongoing efforts to enhance its coverage throughout Nigeria and beyond. The rural connectivity project is also in collaboration with the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) and will utilise the NigComSat-1R Ka-Band platform. Hotspot aims to target numerous rural communities across Nigeria with this service.

The joint initiative will begin immediately, with plans to roll out the first phase in select rural areas within the next six months. This collaboration underscores Nigcomsat’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and positioning Nigeria as a leader in cutting-edge satellite communication technologies.
