Telus to invest US$24 million in Burnaby to expand 5G, fiber networks

Telus has announced an investment of more than US$24 million in Burnaby to connect more homes and businesses to its 5G and PureFibre networks.

The company plans to double the number of new cell towers built across B.C. this year (compared to 2023), expanding coverage in Burnaby, Vancouver, Surrey and Kelowna, according to a press release.

The money comes as part of the company's $17-billion investment through 2028 to improve network infrastructure and operations.

“At Telus, we know that a reliable and powerful network is essential in keeping British Columbians connected to the people, information and resources that matter most,” Darren Entwistle, Telus president and CEO, said in the release.

“These investments will ensure that our customers continue to benefit from the best network experience in the world, which facilitates crucial, generational changes in healthcare, education, teleworking, the environment and our digital economy and societies,” he added.

Telus would not disclose the specific figures related to the number of cell towers planned to the Burnaby NOW but said the company is focused on providing “robust and extensive coverage to support the digital needs of our communities.”

Telus will use artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to plan out the new infrastructure, according to the release.

Telus has connected more than 1.9 million British Columbian homes and businesses to its PureFibre network in the last 10 years.
