The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has initiated a public consultation to gather stakeholder feedback on its draft regulations for last-mile delivery services in Oman. This consultation aims to enhance postal services by regulating postal drivers and vehicles, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
In an online post, the Authority stated that the survey is designed to improve postal services. Ali al Shukaili, Executive Manager of the Postal Sector at TRA, emphasized the importance of public consultation as a regulatory tool, involving licensed companies in telecommunications and postal services, as well as other relevant entities and individuals.
Al Shukaili noted that the public consultation results from a collaboration between the Authority and the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, utilizing the Ministry’s land transport platform, Naql. This collaboration aims to integrate postal services with the broader transport sector, maximizing the benefits of the postal sector through the Naql platform.
Interested parties can participate in the survey on the Authority’s website until June 3. Government officials highlighted that improving last-mile delivery is crucial for boosting e-commerce, which generated $657.1 million in revenues in Oman in 2020.
In 2021, Oman, represented by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, unveiled an e-commerce regulatory framework to pave the way for an executive e-commerce strategy under the Digital Economy Programme. Additionally, Dr. Said al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, announced earlier this year that a new law and roadmap for the postal sector are under development.
