Berlin rolls out 4G on subway network

Berlin’s public transport operator Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) has announced the rollout of 4G services across its entire subway network.

The initiative, a joint effort between BVG and O2 Telefónica, promises high-speed internet access for all passengers and is described by the transport authority as “the most comprehensive indoor mobile communications project in Germany”.

“Our smartphones are our constant companions. No matter whether it’s a private chat or a work email – we all want to be online and at high speed, even on the subway,” said Henrik Falk, CEO of BVG.

“That’s why the comprehensive high-speed mobile network is an important step towards an even more attractive and modern mobility offering. At the same time, the powerful 4G network is the basis for us to be able to offer free Wi-Fi in our subway trains in the future.”

BTS Hotels

The 4G rollout faced a number of challenges during its implementation, from navigating Berlin’s historic tunnel network to accommodating strict safety and environmental regulations.

Previously the technology was distributed across various underground operating rooms along the route network.

But now four central above-ground data centres – so-called “BTS Hotels” – offer access to the base stations at any time, allowing network engineers to add new hardware and software faster.

It also lays the foundation for 5G expansion. At the first stage mobile providers will set up 5G coverage at Alexanderplatz train station on the 3.6 gigahertz frequency.

“Having reliably good cell phone reception in the subways, being able to access the Internet and send emails is part of a modern metropolis for Berliners and guests of our city,” said Franziska Giffey, Berlin’s Senator for Economic Affairs, Energy and Enterprises and Chairwoman of the BVG Supervisory Board.

“We want to become the number one innovation location in Europe. We are also setting the course for this with the future-oriented expansion of mobile communications underground.”

London expands coverage

Earlier this week, Transport for London (TfL) announced that 25 percent of its Tube stations located underground now have access to 4G and 5G services.

Coverage on tunnelled sections between stations on the Piccadilly line will go live in the coming weeks and coverage will also be expanded on the Bakerloo line.

“It’s great to see that even more Tube stations now have high-quality mobile coverage for the first time,” said Shashi Verma, Chief Technology Officer. “This programme is gathering pace and we are working hard to bring the benefits of being able to stay in contact while travelling through our city as quickly as possible.”
