Indonesia to launch Starlink satellite internet service by mid-May 2024

hief Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has announced that Starlink, the satellite-based internet service owned by Elon Musk, will be launched in Indonesia in mid-May 2024.

"Officially, we will launch Starlink within two weeks from now," said Luhut at the "Jakarta Future Forum: Blue Horizons, Green Growth" event in Jakarta on Friday.

Luhut stated that the launch of Starlink would positively impact Indonesia as many blind spots in Indonesia need access to the internet.

He added that Indonesia, together with Starlink, has already signed the necessary agreements and licenses to operate the satellite-based internet service in Indonesia.

"I have spoken with Elon Musk today, three days ago. We will do something, but we have not officially announced it yet. I think we will announce it in Bali as soon as possible," said Luhut.

Previously, Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi said that Starlink service coverage would reach more areas that have faced geographical challenges and have not been covered by local internet service providers due to its satellite-based technology, namely low earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

Currently, Starlink's licensing status has met the operational feasibility test (ULO), which means it has obtained a license as a telecommunications service provider in Indonesia.

Budi stated that Starlink plans to conduct network trials in Indonesia's future capital, Nusantara in East Kalimantan, in mid-May 2024. Budi ensured that Starlink would be fully operational in Indonesia by 2024.
