SAMENA appoints four regional telecom operators as new members to its Board of Directors

Board unanimously elects Sheikh Mohamed Bin Isa Al Khalifa, Group CEO of Batelco as Chairman

Dubai - UAE, November 14, 2011: SAMENA Telecommunications Council, the tri-regional telecommunications consortium during its recently concluded “Convergence to Doha 2011” conference, proudly announced the expansion of its Board of Directors. The addition of the newly elected board members - Turk Telekom Group, Viva Kuwait, Qtel Group, and Bravo has brought the aggregate number of regional telecom operators on the SAMENA Board to 11.

In addition, the SAMENA Board of Directors also unanimously elected Sheikh Mohamed Bin Isa Al Khalifa, CEO of Batelco Group, as the new Chairman of SAMENA. Upon being elected as Chairman, Sheikh Khalifa addressed the Board, expressing his appreciation for his appointment and for the efforts of each member of the board.

Thomas Wilson, Chief Executive & Executive Managing Director of SAMENA Telecommunications Council said, “Sheikh Al Khalifa’s leadership comes at a critical junction in SAMENA’s success and evolution, which was greatly enabled by Eng. Saud Al Daweesh during his tenure as the chairman. Under Sheikh Al Khalifa’s guidance, we foresee building upon our past achievements and creating new opportunities to work toward transforming the regional ICT environment. It is our aim to continue developing stronger strides supporting the Policy objectives of our membership.”

The new members joined Saudi Telecom Group, Orange-Jordan Telecom Group, Omantel Group, Etisalat Group, and Batelco Group on the SAMENA Board of Directors. Pakistan’s PTCL was re-elected to the all-CEO board.

SAMENA’s Annual General Assembly convened at “Convergence to Doha 2011”. The two-day conference served as a platform for debating issues most important to SAMENA and to its membership, and was made possible by Qatar Telecom Group, GBI, Turk Telekom Group, Devoteam, Xtera, Inmarsat, Telcordia, Saudi Telecom Group, and Intigral.
