Hosam El Sokkari is Head of Audience in Yahoo! Middle East. He is responsible for Yahoo! audience and content strategies in the region. Till early 2010 he was head of BBC Arabic. In 2004 he became the first Arab to head the service since its launch in 1938 and led the operation for the launch of BBC Arabic TV, an integral part of a unique multimedia offer to the Arab world. He has most recently been working on a special project for the BBC to create an offer that integrates TV with social media networks. The success of 710 Greenwich has paved the way for a new genre of programming with its innovative approach. He launched BBCArabic.com as the first non English website for the BBC and introduced interactive programmes to the region. Before joining the BBC, Hosam worked as a reporter, columnist as well as science and technology editor for a number of pan-Arab publications. He introduced internet journalism to the Arab world print media with his writings in different publications, while his popular BBC programme, The Electronic Café Tales, brought information technology and the worldwide web issues to the fore of the Arab public discourse. He presented BBC Arabic news and current affairs programmes and interviewed major international figures. Hosam was educated in Cairo, Berlin and London. He has an MSc from the London School of Economics in Analysis, Design and Management of Information Systems.
