SONET

Full Name

Synchronous Optical Network.

Description

SONET defines a technology for carrying many signals of different capacities through a synchronous, flexible, optical hierarchy. It encodes bit streams into optical signals propagated over optical fiber. SONET is the American National Standards Institute's (ANSI) standard for synchronous data transmission on optical media.

Origin/Facts

In the 1980's Bellcore developed the Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) standard. Previous efforts included ISDN and BISDN. SONET can carry as payloads , the North American PDH hierarchy of varied bit rates.

Advantages/Disadvantages

Advantages:
De-multiplexing is easy
Reduction in equipment requirements and an increase in network reliability
Provision of overhead and payload bytes'the overhead bytes permit management of the payload bytes on an individual basis and facilitate centralized fault sectionalization
Definition of a synchronous multiplexing format for carrying lower-level digital signals (such as DS 1, DS 3) and a synchronous structure that greatly simplifies the interface to digital switches, digital cross-connect switches, and add-drop multiplexers
Availability of a set of generic standards that enable products from different vendors to be connected
Definition of a flexible architecture capable of accommodating future applications, with a variety of transmission rates.

Disadvantages:
Fixed circuits:SONET provisions point-to-point circuits between ring nodes. Each circuit is allocated a fixed amount of bandwidth that is wasted when not used.
Waste of bandwidth for meshing. Provisioning the circuits necessary to create a logical mesh over a SONET ring is not only difficult, but also results in an inefficient use of ring bandwidth.
Multieast traffic. On a SONET ring, multicast traffic requires each source to allocate a separate circuit for each destination.
